J.J.Mall
Winter

Thailand International Ballroom Dancing Championships 2008 turned out to be a
great success on 4th May 2008. There were four organizers, namely United
Kingdom Alliance (UKA) originated in England, the two local entities - Thailand
Association of Teachers of Dancing (TATD) & Dancing For Health Association
(DHA), and Come Dancing Studio Academy (CDSA) from Hong Kong.
12 participating countries were Australia, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia,
Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. The
Championships was held in the spacious Exhibition Hall, 6/F, J.J.Mall, one of the
most famous shopping centres in Bangkok. The dance floor area is bigger than
Queen Elizabeth Stadium arena in Hong Kong, resembling Winter Garden of
Blackpool. Latin discipline competitions commenced at 08.30 hrs (unbelievable to
Hong Kong people, some of the South East Asia judges also shared the feelings!).
Standard discipline competitions were commenced at 13.00 hrs. Four major events :
Open Professional Latin, Open Amateur Standard, Open Amateur Latin & Open
Professional Standard were the highlights in the evening Dinner Party. Jun, He &
Min, Zhang (China), Rakchai & Sureeporn (Thailand), Woropoj & Ramon (Thailand),
And Yasufumi & Miwa Tsubouci (Japan) emerged as Champions respectively. The
quality of dancing and magnitude of competitions were the best in Thailand in most
recent years.
Many adjudicators, competitors and guests were amazed how CDSA could
co-organize such a competition crossover from Hong Kong. Many friends of mine
curiously asked me, "Do you earn money from this Project?". My answer was of
course negative. Dedicated in organizing an event from another country was
purely for the promotion of my lifetime beloved - DanceSport. Another theme was
to express the passion and enthusiasm of Hongkongnese (also to satisfy my personal
pride of honour)! As a contrast to last year's first organization of competition by
CDSA in Thailand when 23 couples were entered from Hong Kong, I had tried my
best to bring only six couples this time. The reason was the full airline seats owing to the long holiday in Hong Kong. |
